You Are Powerful…Believe it!

“You are powerful.” That is what she said to me. Here was this woman who didn’t know me from anywhere, telling me that I was powerful in a time when I felt powerless. To be powerful is to exude great strength or power, but for me, I was spiraling into a darkness that I was barely keeping my head above water.

I carried those words with me the rest of the week and month, and now years later, I am passing them along to you.

You are powerful.

I have learned through my journey that you will and have faced many obstacles. For me, and maybe for you, you won’t know until you are faced with that obstacle and overcome it that you feel yourself taking a little bit of that power back. I had no solution to my dilemma but hearing those words gave me the power to overcome it.

It isn’t easy to assess your circumstances when you are right up close to your situation. You are so close and focused on that blemish or that thought, it has been spinning around in your head for weeks and months, and all you can do is see that. A friend of mine calls it the ‘sunken place’ similar to the one from the movie ‘Get Out. He can’t get out when he is so deep in his thoughts and situation.

It is easy to focus on the negative. It is the thing that triggers us. The thought sends us following the rabbit down the rabbit hole. But, I have news for you, you don’t have to follow it! I know it’s hard! I often waste a whole day because I have gone down this rabbit hole of negative thinking. What comes easily for other people doesn’t come easily for me. I have read books or even talked to people who will say don’t do it. However, I have found the more someone tells me not to do something I am going to do it.

That is like me telling you don’t think about the Elephant! Boom, now you are thinking about an elephant. It is why when I was working with children, a teacher said to me, “don’t tell kids not to run; instead, tell them to walk.”

This is how the mind works. You have to replace the negative thoughts will positive ones. There won’t be perfect days; I will not sit here and tell you that you will have positive thoughts every day, simply by doing it. It takes time, a lot of time. It takes practice. Like exercising, you have to be consistent, which is a struggle.

Do you know what the key will be? Yep, to be powerful! After reading this, you are already one step closer. Take that with you every day. You are powerful — everything we need to be powerful we already have inside of us.

At first, I didn’t believe those words or consider myself powerful, but I recognized moments where I exuded strength and power after repeating them. Celebrate yourself even if it’s small, even if it doesn’t matter to you. Positive thinking for five minutes is a success. Even if you woke up this morning and thought today would be a good day, no matter what happened the rest of the day, you were powerful in thinking it would be great, and tomorrow, you have a chance to make it great.

So, go out there and be powerful because you are.
